About Our Stereoviews & Photographs

The art of stereo photography enables us to see flat photographs as three dimensional images. It dates from the 1850's, almost from the start of photography itself. Stereo photography became an immediate hit with the public and stayed that way for 75 years. Victorian families could purchase sets of stereoviews taken in exotic places and use them to take virtual tours while sitting in the quiet and safety of their parlors. Stereoview sets of the Holy Land were a big hit as were views of the wars of the day, the Spanish American War, the Boer War and the Russo Japanese War.

To make stereo photographs special cameras are used that take two photographs of the same object at the same time. The stereo camera has two lenses with approximately two and a half inches between the centers of the lens, about the same distance as there is between a human's eyes. By mounting the two images in a certain order and using a viewer, we are able to see them in 3-d.

All our stereoviews and regular photographs are shot on film, many with vintage cameras, by Robert Spickard. The images are developed and printed individually by hand. This can be quite labor intensive, especially for the stereoviews, which Robert also mounts by hand on archival rag board. Because of all the hand labor involved, there will be slight variations in each print. We use our computer only to scan the image for our website. No other digital manipulation is used.

For the camera buffs among you, Robert's main stereo cameras are vintage Realists and Reveres from the 1940's and 1950's. He also uses Nimslo cameras from the 1980's. For the most part, he uses Ilford HP4 & HP5 film.

At this time we are unable to offer stereo viewers, although we are hoping to do so in the future. Here are two websites for you to check out.

www.3dstereo.com

www.berezin.com

Both of these sites sell several kinds of 3d viewers from the very simple & inexpensive lorgnette style to kits to build your own to very fancy ones with real glass lenses.
